Looking Back

Today, during a nice bike ride with DH, I realized that one of my favorite Christmas gifts that he gave me last year was the bike helmet mirror.  Not the most pricey gift, but one that I use and appreciate every time I see it.   The little mirror allows me to look back and see what's behind me.  It helps keep me safe. We don't ride on high traffic roads much, but even on low traffic roads, it's very nice to be able to check out what's coming up.

I've mentioned before that I keep a daily log/journal of this weight loss journey.  I've kept it off and on for several years and pretty faithfully for over two years.  I don't write a lot, (especially since I've started blogging) but I do record my morning weight every day and usually my blood pressure and what exercise I've done.  I also note my "official" weight from my WW weigh in.  I take my scale along when we travel so that I can keep up.  Looking over the past several months, I've re-gained weight.  I've gotten through some difficult times and have finally gotten myself back in the swing of weight loss.   I noticed, looking over my journal, that I'd become careless in keeping track and had entire weeks that were blank during that period.  My journal is a tool that helps me.  I need to use it and I will.  I think I'll also re-read my blog posts to rev my enthusiasm and to re-learn some of the things that helped me lose last year.

The poison ivy is losing the battle; the swelling is all gone, the itchiness is gone, and even the redness is almost gone.  This megadose of prednisone is doing the trick.  Did you know that weight gain is one of the side effects of prednisone?  And you don't lose it automatically when the medicine stops.  It makes you retain water,  depletes your potassium levels, and causes an increase in appetite.  I read about it and discovered that if I strictly limit my salt, eat a banana a day, and watch my intake I can overcome that tendency toward weight gain.  Today is the last day of the prednisone dosage and I think I've won!

  1. Hi Tish, so glad to hear that your little friend "Ivy" is packing her bags and waving goodbye.

I go through these periods of "being stuck" at a weight for a long time. It feels to me that I'm still doing everything right, but the truth is that I must just be adding enough extra bites of food to prevent me from losing more.

Most helpful tools for me are weighing every morning, and keeping all snack foods out of the house. I'm currently not losing, but I am maintaining all but 2 pounds of what I lost.

  2. Love the picking pics, Tish. My husband has a mirror on his but not me. I'm afraid I'd distract myself and fall off my bike! We've hardly ridden at all this season and I hope this week we can get life back to routine and get some rides in.

  3. Love the pic - I wander who took it!!

I've written about the prednisone battle many times! A month long course of Prednisone in early 2008 is what got me started on my 30 pound regain. People will argue the fact that it doesn't fall right back off when you stop taking the medicine, but you are right, it doesn't!! You have to lose Prednisone weight the same way you lose weight normally. Took it again TWICE when I was so sick earlier this year, and like you, was prepared and WON the battle this time. Stay strong!

  4. The most important thing for me is tracking food. If I don't do it, I eat too many calories. The second thing is to plan ahead, like making 100 cal snacks or prepping salads to just reach and grab when I am hungry.

I have not list any weight for almost 4 months. Lots has happened including a lot of professional travel that make it hard to keep in my cal budget. But I am committed to doing this and getting healthy. I'm behind you, tish. Stay strong. Michele

  5. I agree with Michelle, tracking my food is key. I use the LoseIt app on my iphone and would not have gotten this far without it.

  6. Tracking my food for sure, but I also kept a spreadsheet of my weight every day while I was losing weight. It was so motivating to see the graph move in a downward direction.

  7. This whole 'tracking' food thing is pretty new to me, however I can see how helpful it is already! Glad your poison ivy is getting better!

Just found your blog while I was out hopping and love it! I'm your newest GFC follower.
