I have a willful child living inside my head. You'd never know it unless you we're privy to my internal dialog. Yes, I talk to myself a lot. Usually it's a silent conversation, thank goodness. Like this morning. DH popped up to the alarm CD with his usually cheery morning routine. My own alarm was set for 30 minutes later. I mumbled my "goodbye, I love you, have a good day," and turned my pillow to the cool side and dove back under the covers. When my alarm went off I was strongly tempted to push "pause." I didn't, but only because I remembered how fast the temperature was supposed to get hot and awful this morning. Wednesday morning is a running morning for me. I have my WI at noon, and the Wednesday morning run has been my "last chance workout" for over a year and a half. But I looked at the temperature outside and saw how hot it was already. "I don't wanna run when it's this hot," I whined to myself. I weighed myself and saw that it was less than last week's weight. Well and good. Maybe I could get by and still lose this week without running. I put on my running outfit, but only because I had laid out my clothes last night. I had breakfast. I stuck my nose out the back door and confirmed that it was hot and awful, as predicted. Well, I was dressed, and it was still early, and, if I got out the door right then, I'd have time to watch some of the USA/Algeria game when I got back. I had a good run, and ran an extra mile, just because. Yes, it was hot, but I felt good and proud of myself.
Routine won again. It's good to have established routines. It worked with raising willful kids, too.
And my WI, today? I lost 5 sticks o' butter (1.2 pounds).
What routines do you have that get you through the "I don't wannas" in your day?

A huge congrats! To both the loss and for the run you didn't want to do. I have been debating on turning on the a/c. It is 92 outside. I love open windows. Although I have taken a nap the last 3 days because of the heat.
ReplyDeleteI have two "I don't wannas", the first is getting up early so I can read my Scripture, meditate, drink my coffee, and get ready before my kids are up. I know that if I sleep in, I will not be able to have this morning time, but there are still days where I struggle when the alarm goes off. The second is working out at night. I usually run or ride the elliptical after my girls go to bed. I always sleep better if I exercise, however there are times I just want to be a counch potato. Last night was one of those times, I felt terrible an was in a bad mood with my HE (husband extraordinaire). Today, has been a better day, I woke up early and I worked out for 45 minutes tonight. I am showered and feel great!

Congratulations on the loss and getting things done. Thanks also for the mention. I think you are right that routines are very important. It is definitely working for you!!
ReplyDeleteTish the firebomb! You are melting away! Congrats. Almost more on the running when you don't wanna--that's such a huge victory.
ReplyDeleteGood for you! I am so much better off if I exercise in the morning by a certain hour. If I wait, it gets harder and harder. And if I don't work out, I tend to eat more. Double whammy!
ReplyDeleteHmmm, I wish I had a secret response to the I Don't Wannas that worked every time. Usually I can convince myself that if I run at lunch time, that means I don't have to do it when I get home from work. For some reason that sounds SO much better to me than having to go home after a long day and still fit in my runs or workouts!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on losing another 1.2 lbs!
Great loss!
ReplyDeleteI am a routine kind of girl with my workouts too, I save them to the end of the day. Being at home with my kids during the day, it's something to look forward too, I like to end my day with me time ;-)
Getting past the 'I dont wannnas' is hard, but like you I think a good routine or good habits really helps.
ReplyDeleteI also love to set goals that I can exceed. So if it say "at least 3 x exercise" I love knowing that if I go during an "I don't wanna" I'll get to FOUR.
The other thing I've done is tell myself I just have to start. Just start a walk, or just get to the gym. then i can leave if I want to. In my memory I've only left the gym once after just arriving (my minimal agreement) because that day it just felt bad. Most of the time i'm over the "don't wanna" once I get myself out of intertia
Congrats on going for the run and losing weight! Awesome!
ReplyDeleteI exercise right after my morning coffee, if I don't, too many excuses will come into play and I will be unhappy if I don't get in my walk.
I have had to not blog until after exercise happens!
Doesn't it feel great to do something you really don't want to do? That emotional high serves as such a great motivator for the next thing that comes up that we'd rather avoid.
ReplyDeleteKudos on all that melted butter!
You sound so much like me. I'm still telling myself I don't have to do things when I'm out the door already doing them. Congratulations.
