Slow Loser Status

I ran early this morning and am happy to report that I ran 30 minutes without stopping! C25K called for 28 minutes, but when I reached the 28 minute mark I felt good, so I ran on for a couple more minutes. I'm so lucky that my knees don't bother me at my age (knocking on wood!). All my bumps and bruises from my accident two weeks ago are mostly gone and the bruised rib feeling is much less bothersome now. I have to say that on my bike ride Monday night (the first since the accident) I was a little apprehensive about falling or another accident, but things went well.

Today is Wednesday and Wednesday is my WI day. I was feeling good about staying OP with eating and exercise and my morning visits to the scale indicated I might lose two pounds. I've told you before that I'm a slow loser. Always have been and I've got that hateful slow metabolism that comes with the fifth decade. When I stepped on the scale, I was amazed and delighted when the scale showed 3.2 pounds lost. 3.2 plus 3.6 from last week plus 2.8 from the week before =9.6 in the past three weeks. That doesn't sound slow at all. I'm definitely NOT complaining. I'll happily exchange my slow loser status for something more like DH's seeming ability to think about losing 5 pounds one day and achieving it the next.

It seems almost too obvious, but maybe my good losses have something to do with my newly revised exercise and eating habits. One major food change over the last several weeks is that I've really scaled back how much I eat at lunch time. I used to regularly have a leftover portion of my previous night's dinner. The dinners were pretty thoughtfully planned, but usually included some sort of whole grain pasta, brown rice or potato. When I re-read the CORE (WW) guidelines, they allowed you to eat all those things, but suggested you limit it to once per day. I did lose before while not limiting whole grains, but I lost more slowly. I've also tried to be more intentional about not "super-sizing" my portions, even of nutritious, low point foods.

Are you a slow loser?

  1. OMG yes! Slooowwwww. Congrats on your loss:) I was just moments before commenting on a blog of a gal who is switching from points to core. My diet plan (South Beach) is quite similar. And I know from reading lots of other dieter's experiences on it that the more grains someone eats each day the slower they typically lose.

  3. Oh yes, I was definitely a slow loser! I think I lost 2+ lbs/week only a handful of times.. so I completely understand your excitement! :)

  4. Oh darn. I left a comment and a question last night. Congrats on such a great weight loss! You must feel great. I was wondering if you were hungry a lot of the time, or if you think it is mostly just choosing wisely.

  5. Debby, I really haven't been all that hungry. Remember I'm pushing water these days and drinking 10 or 11 cups of water keeps me feeling full between meals. I have about 3/4 cup of ff cottage cheese and one small can of mandarin oranges for lunch. I try to eat dinner on the early side--before 6:30. Right now I'm feeling very "strong" in my resolve, I sure hope this keeps up--but it was only a week ago that I wrote about temptation!

  7. Great job on the running and the loss this week! Woo Hoo!

I am a turtle with weight loss. If I lost 2 pounds in a week, that was a super loss for me.

Heck, this last 10 pounds has taken me over a year to not lose LOL!

  11. Add me to the list of Slow Losers. Like several have said, if I lose 2 lbs in a week that's a major victory (and a rare exception, and almost always proceeded or followed by weeks of nothing or very little)

I do think your intense exercise (jogging) is playing a big role in the recent whoosh, but the observation of the carbs at lunch is interesting too
